El Rahelet is a project aimed at providing fun, interactive events and activities for children living in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. First born out of the Mar Elias camp - central in Beirut - it has since expanded to Sabra & Shatila, Burj-el-Barajneh, Ain-el-Hilweh, and most recently, Nahr-el-Bared.
El Rahelet, Arabic for “The Outings,” is an initiative designed to take groups of 20 children, ages 8-10, out of the camps on a regular basis, while providing opportunities for local community members and businesses to learn more about, and connect with, underprivileged Palestinian refugee children.
Volunteers have the opportunity to help in one, or a combination of four ways: Teaching, Hosting, Sponsoring, & Facilitating.
-Teach Can you share your expertise and teach these children a special skill? (e.g. Origami, kite-making, painting, dance, or sport?)
-Host an event Do you have facilities at home or work to invite these children for swimming, a barbeque, or horse-back riding?
-Sponsor Would you feel like treating these kids to a special event? You can sponsor tickets for these children to enjoy the cinema, amusement parks, or festivals!
-Facilitate an arrangement Might you have special access to authorize a tour of an ice-cream factory, an inside look into a television studio, or to climb aboard a ship?
El Rahelet invites you to share a part of your world and help these kids feel special. Unfold and connect with children you'd probably never have the opportunity to meet otherwise - an experience that will open your eyes and heart.
